One cup of tea later, the boy continued to hang around the tea house.
“Go home,” Michael ordered as he paused in his sweeping. They were outside in the warm sunshine.
“Can’t,” the boy said, kicking a stone across the road with the toe of his sandal.
“Why not?” Michael asked. “Did you forget where it is?”
The boy rolled his brown eyes.
“I’m supposed to be in school. My mom comes home from work and finds me there, she’ll kill me.”
Michael gave the boy a blank look.
“Go to school.” He resumed sweeping.
“Can I see your katana?” The infuriating child continued his pestering.
“Move.”
The boy skipped out of the way of the broom.
“You have one then?”
“Mind your business.”
“My friend Richie saw you walking with it clutched in your hand a couple of days ago. He said it’s blue. The scabbard and the, um…”
“Never mind. Go home or go to school. You can’t stay here.” Michael shooed the boy away with his right hand; the broom was still clutched in his left.
“Can I work here? At the tea house?” the boy asked. “Instead of going to school?”
“You’re too young,” Michael answered. “You would burn yourself in the kitchen and spill tea on the customers because you’re too short and clumsy to serve properly.”
“Am not!” The boy thrust his bottom lip out in a pout.
“Go to school. Isn’t that what your friend Richie does?” Michael asked, trying to appeal to the boy’s need for companionship.
“Yeah, but he’s flunking out. He’s a slow reader, his handwriting is sloppy, but he can count, add, and subtract like a genius.”
“He’s also good at making up and spreading stories about me,” Michael grumbled, sweeping the last leaves off the sidewalk.
“No, I think he heard about you from his parents.”
Michael scowled. Of course.
“Stop following me.” Michael finished sweeping and reentered the tea house.
“Stop moving and I will.” The boy followed him back inside.
